It’s been a busy week.
So far, I’ve gotten official notification that I’ve passed the qualifier (thanks for the comments!) and I’ve turned 26. That may not seem like a lot, but it sure feels like it.
I spent so much time studying for the qualifier, that it feels weird to not be pushing towards something. I mean, obviously, I have to do research, and maintain a lab, and any number of things.
So, in a way, I feel a bit lost. It’s almost like the sheer magnitude of what’s left is too much to comprehend. Either that, or I’m just interminably lazy.
don’t worry. you have plenty of work left to go for your PHD.
I think that kind of emotional response to a completed goal is totally normal, actually. I don’t think it means you’re lazy at all. I expect you’ll find your feet again in a week or two.
I was the same way — I’d been focused on surviving the first two years of grad school for so long, and then focused on passing the prelim, that once was over I realized I had no real long-term goals anymore. I floundered about for at least the entire summer, which I don’t recommend.
On a more short-term basis, I spent the entire week after prelims drunk. That I most certainly do recommend.
I think http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=146 says it all.
Old is gold. You will find that out when you rech my age. Good luck on
Ph.D.
